Is it Time for Furnace Service or Replacement?

When winter strikes and we start taking calls about furnaces that aren't producing heat, most of them can be tracked back to irregular furnace service and maintenance. If furnace issues are not addressed, your system could suddenly stop operating and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are a couple warning signs you can watch for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system quits working.

Furnace Age

The typical life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's a safe bet to start furnace shopping now. Buying a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make in a hurry. Give yourself plenty of time to view and weigh all of your options.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they get older and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been correctly maintained. Envision the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that could be spent on a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last few years of a furnace's life are when your system incurs the most breakdowns. Begin adding up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the prior two years - a new system might be a better option.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any weird dings coming from your system? Furnaces start making odd noises near the end of their life. If your furnace is cycling on and off frequently or blowing chilly air, it's time to consider getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home very well. Your home may start feeling stuffy and anyone with allergies may notice more symptoms. A couple other red flags are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
